We recognise that if we are to accelerate towards our goal of an autonomous, connected, electrified and shared (ACES) future mobility, we can leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of more efficient technologies and solutions.
That is why we are collaborating with academia and selected technology and industry partners to further our research into alternative fuel sources, while also increasing our investment in the development of next-generation electrified powertrains and improving our offering of highly efficient petrol and diesel engines.
Lightweight At Heart
Fundamental to efficiency of any vehicle is addressing weight. Reducing weight contributes to reducing emissions and increasing electric range. At Jaguar Land Rover, we have decades of experience in creating lightweight vehicle structures. This includes expertise in aluminium body architectures - the Range Rover was the first all-aluminium SUV and every Jaguar saloon car has an aluminium architecture at its heart.
Our latest Land Rover Discovery Sport, Jaguar E-PACE and Range Rover Evoque models feature an evolved, mixed metal lightweight architecture, creating new horizons to their capability. Our lightweighting skills are applied to reduce vehicle weight, without compromise: our new Defender features an aluminium-intensive architecture which is hybrid by design, allowing for a range of hybrid powertrain options, while remaining the most capable Land Rover ever.
Our journey in flexible, lightweight vehicle architectures will pass a new milestone with the introduction of our next-generation Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), in 2021. Designed and engineered in-house, MLA is capable of delivering compact SUVs up to full-size luxury SUVs and saloons and enables a truly flexible approach to integrating hybrid and electrified powertrains, allowing us to be responsive to demand and extend choice for our customers.
Ingenium, Electrified By Design
Our advanced diesel and petrol Ingenium engines are built to maximise performance and environmental sustainability at the same time as driving down running costs for car owners.
Designed, engineered and manufactured in-house, in the UK, Ingenium is a modular, flexible and scalable, all-aluminium engine design, with common core technologies.
This allows us to offer a broad choice of three, four, and six-cylinder engines and range of electrification options, with Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) models.
All petrol and diesel variants use the latest fuel injection, turbocharging and emissions control systems. In our petrol engines, this includes a patented electrohydraulic valvetrain, providing variable control of intake valve lift for optimum power, torque and efficiency throughout the engine’s operating range.
The result is outstanding performance with low CO2 and NOx, meeting the most demanding regulations worldwide.
We have led the development of fully electric premium vehicles and were the first to introduce an all-electric premium SUV, with the Jaguar I-PACE, in 2018. Employing the latest pouch cell battery chemistry, I-PACE combines genuine Jaguar dynamic thrills, with electric performance and impressive range of 470km (WLTP).
Our next all-electric model will be the new generation of our flagship Jaguar XJ, supported by our investment in an electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem, in the heart of the UK.
Over the last decade, Jaguar Land Rover has made large and sustained investment in research and development to reduce vehicle emissions and this includes alternative fuels.
We believe hydrogen can play a role as a viable fuel of the future and this will continue to be a focus of research with our partners.
